Legal support
A network of specialised lawyers helps local caretakers get the laws protecting free-roaming cats properly enforced.
Why it’s needed
The laws protecting free-roaming cats exist, but without legal support, the fate of a cat colony depends on the goodwill of a single official. The network’s lawyers remind municipalities and local health authorities (ASL) what the law requires and who is responsible for what.
Typical cases
Access to neutering at local health authorities (ASL)
Local health authorities (ASL) that restrict access to certain categories of volunteers, or that impose requirements not provided for by the law (e.g. requiring every municipality to have its own veterinary shelter): assistance in correctly interpreting the relevant responsibilities.
Census and geo-mapping
Support for caretakers and municipalities in census procedures, the recognition of cat colony locations, and the traceability of interventions.
Recognition of the colony caretaker
Cases where the role of colony caretaker is not formally recognised by the local authority: guidance on how to formalise and protect this role.
For lawyers and legal professionals
If you're a lawyer or legal professional interested in contributing to the project, you can apply to become a volunteer lawyer for the network. Support can be occasional or ongoing, covering matters related to animal law, administrative law, and dealings with local health authorities (ASL) and municipalities.
